International Music Day

At the Library, we periodically set up a “thematic display” where books and documents belonging to our heritage related to a theme or anniversary are exhibited. For the month of October 2025, we have chosen International Music Day.

International Music Day was established in 1975 by the International Music Council (IMC), founded in 1949 by UNESCO. It is the largest network of organizations and institutions working in the music sector globally. The International Music Council promotes access to music for all, its value and cultural importance, seeking to reach all corners of the globe.

Three objectives were outlined by Yehudi Menuhin, founder of the IMC, in a letter to all members on November 30, 1974:

  • The promotion of musical art to and through all social classes.

  • The application of UNESCO's ideals of peace and friendship among peoples, the evolution of their cultures, the exchange of experiences, and mutual appreciation of their aesthetic values

  • the promotion of the activities of the International Music Council, its international member organizations and national committees, as well as its program policy in general.

Music and mathematics have always had a close and profound dialogue. Although they belong to distinct cultural spheres, they share various formal aspects: for example, a specific language that tends to exclude those who do not know it and the absolute necessity of mastering a certain technicality, which is long and demanding to learn. According to tradition, the birth of musical science can be traced back to Pythagoras, who discovered the numerical relationships underlying musical consonances by observing the sounds produced by a blacksmith or experimenting with the monochord. On display is a selection of books and articles on the evolution of this connection.
