From February 23 to March 27, 2026, the Library of the School of Mathematical, Physical, and Natural Sciences
(Via Dodecaneso 35, 4th floor) will host the exhibition:
Gino Loria. Matematiche, didattica, libri mondi curated by Claudio Bartocci
with Mara Nicolini and Laura Testoni
A mathematician and historian of mathematics, Loria was a prominent international figure who, in hundreds of articles and lectures, was committed to cultivating an ideal of culture that combined scientific and purely humanistic notions in terms of both content and method.
For Loria, the history of mathematics is not a history of ‘facts’ but of ‘ideas’ and provides the essential tool for trying to understand how, over the centuries, these ideas intertwine, overlap, and contaminate other domains of knowledge through a multitude of mutual interactions. Culture, of which mathematics is an “integral part,” as Federigo Enriques warns us, is not a monolithic structure but a multidimensional network of relationships.
The exhibition, organized into display cases with audio guides, panels, and multimedia screens, unfolds along three themes that focus on the “global” and “humanistic” intellectual profile of the mathematician Loria, his historical and educational interests, and finally his work as a bibliographer, bibliophile, and founder of libraries.
The exhibition is curated by Claudio Bartocci with Mara Nicolini and Laura Testoni. It has been created by the Library of the School of Mathematical, Physical, and Natural Sciences and by SBA, Digital Library sector. On display are monographs, brochures, diplomas, and manuscripts from the “Gino Loria” collection held at the Library of Mathematical, Physical, and Natural Sciences of the University of Genoa.
The collection documents international scientific production in the field of mathematics from the 19th to the first half of the 20th century, plus some antique books and Gino Loria's handwritten notebooks, all digitized in Doge, the University's Digital Library.
The inauguration will be held on Monday, February 23, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. in room 715, Via Dodecaneso 35 - DIMA.
The exhibition can be visited at the Library (Via Dodecaneso 35, 4th floor) from February 23 to March 27, 2026, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
