At the Library we periodically set up a "thematic showcase" where books and documents belonging to our heritage connected to a theme or anniversary are displayed. For the month of May 2025 we have chosen Artificial Intelligence.
Artificial intelligence (AI or also Artificial intelligence) is a computer technology that studies the programming and design of systems. These systems are then built and designed to provide machines with one or more properties considered typically human, ranging from learning to visual or space-time perception. Thanks to artificial intelligence it is possible to make machines capable of performing complex actions and "reasoning", learning from mistakes, and performing functions that until now were exclusive to human intelligence.
The origins of artificial intelligence and its history as a scientific discipline date back to the 1950s. It was precisely in this period of great scientific ferment that the first conference was held in which the major computer science experts of the time took part. Among these great computer scientists was Alan Turing, considered one of the fathers of modern computer science. A few years earlier, in the article “Computing machinery and intelligence”, Alan Turing had proposed a test, known as the “Turing Test”, according to which a machine could be considered intelligent if its behavior, observed by a human being, was considered indistinguishable from that of a person.
Nowadays, it is a sub-discipline of computer science that deals with studying the theory, techniques and methodologies that allow the design of both hardware and software systems capable of processing electrical performances that simulate a relevance of human intelligence. The result of the work of artificial intelligence must not be difficult to distinguish from that carried out by a human with specific skills.
Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the way we live and work, finding application in a wide range of sectors: healthcare (diagnosis, drug development, personalized healthcare), industrial and communications (virtual assistants, automatic translation, chatbots).
